CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF THE KING’S DAUGHTERS, Norfolk, Va.

Faith was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis at age 5. Doctors discovered an inoperable brain tumor on her optic nerve that required 60 weeks of chemotherapy. Child life specialists, whose positions are funded through CMN Hospitals donations, significantly brightened Faith’s long hours of treatment. These child development experts focused on keeping Faith’s life as child-friendly as possible, through play and self-expression activities that encourage normal development, education and just plain fun.

At age 8, Faith’s tumor began growing again, and more chemotherapy was necessary. When Faith’s mother, Karen, told her she was sorry they’d have to return to the hospital, Faith’s reply indicates just how much child life specialists meant to her. “That’s OK, Mommy. I don’t mind going back. I miss my friends there.”
