Keldon Hemingway
AGE 13
INOPERABLE BENIGN ASTROCYTOMA
PALMETTO HEALTH CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, Columbia, S.C.
At 6 years old, Keldon began vomiting and having frequent headaches. Tests revealed an inoperable brain tumor, benign astrocytoma. He began 18 months of chemotherapy to shrink the tumor and had two shunts implanted at the front of his skull.
Local donations to CMN Hospitals provided the child life specialists who supported, educated and played with Keldon during his diagnosis and the long hours and days of treatment. From holding his hand when he was given a shot (an absolute necessity, Keldon’s mother insists) to art and music therapy, child life specialists kept Keldon and his family smiling during long days and provided them with education and advocacy throughout his treatment. CMN Hospitals donations also fund a program called Sibling Sidekicks, which helped Keldon’s brother understand cancer treatment. Keldon, now 13, will continue to have brain scans to ensure his tumor isn’t growing, but for now he is healthy and happy. Though his time in the hospital is a distant memory, it’s a pleasant one, thanks to the child life specialists who served Keldon and his family.
