ATV ACCIDENT AND KIDNEY FAILURE

Emilee was in a serious ATV accident while visiting friends far from home. Doctors could have chosen to medevac Emilee to a number of hospitals. Fortunately, through CMN Hospitals donations, their hometown hospital had a Level 1 trauma center equipped to handle Emilee’s complex injuries. By the end of Emilee’s care, she’d seen a nephrologist, cardiologist, orthopedic specialist, plastic surgeon and infectious disease doctor, all at the children’s hospital.

Emilee’s father, who had been working in Iraq when she was hurt, rushed home to be with his family while Emilee was in the hospital. When she was stable enough to be released, he flew back to Iraq, never guessing that Emilee would return to the hospital within 24 hours.

After just a few hours at home, she began to hallucinate, had a dangerously high fever and intense stomach pains. Emilee’s kidneys, unable to filter the antibiotics she was receiving for her other injuries, were failing. Dialysis and blood transfusions saved her kidneys, but gangrene and other infections threatened Emilee’s foot. Emilee’s mother Mindi remembers sitting at Emilee’s bedside with the infectious diseases doctor that CMN Hospitals donations had helped recruit. Through his own tears, he promised that he would find out what was happening in Emilee’s body, and help her heal. She is living proof that he kept his word.
