Kali Hardig
AGE 13
PRIMARY AMEBIC MENINGOENCEPHALITIS
ARKANSAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, Little Rock, Ark.
When Kali Hardig developed a fever after spending the afternoon at a local swim park, Kali’s mom, Traci, sensed something wasn’t right. Kali’s temperature kept rising. At 103 degrees Traci rushed Kali to the emergency room where doctors discovered that Kali had contracted an extremely rare brain-eating bacteria — so unusual that only two of 128 people in the last fifty years had survived it.
Kali was treated with a new anti-ameba drug straight from the Centers for Disease Control. Her body temperature was lowered to 93 degrees, a technique used to preserve undamaged brain tissue. CMN Hospitals donations supported Kali through transport, facilities and research during her two-month stay at her children’s hospital, including 22 days in the intensive care unit.
Traci watched over Kali every step of the way, praying that Kali could beat the 1 percent survival rate of her brain infection. Traci, who had been battling breast cancer, told Kali to “fight like Mom does.” Miraculously, just two months after contracting the deadly ameba, Kali returned home with no trace of the bacteria in her system. This photo is particularly special for Kali as her mother lost her battle to cancer just weeks after it was taken.
