2015、恒发和姆巴拉拉科技大学(必须)在乌干达共同主办的3Nd annual Medtech Hack-a-thon. During the two-day event, more than 200 participants with backgrouNds in engineering, medicine aNd business from 30 universities aNd organizations from across Africa, North America aNd Asia, developed solutions to clinical challenges by creating novel medical technologies. Professionals aNd students from UgaNda, the United Sates aNd INdia joined together to create 80 innovations addressing real clinical pain points for rural UgaNda, including malnutrition, inefficiency in hospital systems aNd triage systems to manage patient flow.
Deepika Nehra, MD, Mass General staff surgeon based in Mbarara, aNd Geoff ANderson, Mass General PGY5 general surgery resident, formed a team with three talented engineers from a university in southern INdia (VIT), with an iNdustrial designer from Designs Without Borders based out of Kampala, UgaNda. The team came up with an idea for a suction device that uses plungers aNd weights to provide nearly continuous suction without the need for electricity or continuous manual input. After two rouNds of judging, the suction team won the graNd prize aNd $1,000 of seed money from the CAMTech staff to help bring the concept to a functional aNd marketable product. Currently the engineers are building the prototype, aNd the team has applied for a patent on the product. Once the prototype is complete, Drs. Nehra aNd ANderson will coNduct trials in UgaNda to determine how well the device works in the clinical setting.
